Dr. Susan B. Tumwebaze holds a Higher Professional Diploma and a Master’s degree in Applied Statistics, and brings a wealth of experience in scientific data management, statistical modelling, and hands-on research. Her journey began with rigorous coursework in hypothesis testing, regression analysis, multivariate methods, and time-series forecasting, complemented by extensive practical projects that deepened her expertise in R programming. Over the years, she has become a certified R practitioner, adept at guiding learners through every stage of the data analysis pipeline from importing and cleaning data with the tidy verse to creating dynamic visualizations and building interactive dashboards in Shiny.
Her passion for applying statistical methods to real-world challenges is exemplified by her research on the adaptation of gasification technology for modern energy production in the Lake Victoria Basin. In that project, Dr. Tumwebaze led field surveys, designed experiments to optimize gasifier performance, and used multivariate analysis and predictive modelling to deliver actionable recommendations for rural electrification. She has published her findings in peer-reviewed journals, highlighting sustainable energy strategies for communities around the lake.
In addition to her research, Dr. Tumwebaze served as assistant lecturer in the Department of Forestry, Biodiversity & Tourism, where she developed and taught courses in environmental statistics, survey sampling, and GIS data analysis. She supervised postgraduate theses on biodiversity monitoring and ecosystem services, fostering the next generation of scientists. As national coordinator for a regional initiative on strengthening civil society for participatory forest management in East Africa, she designed monitoring frameworks, trained local stakeholders in data collection and impact assessment, and ensured that community voices shaped forestry policies.
With her interdisciplinary background, proven leadership, and a learner-cantered approach, Dr. Tumwebaze is uniquely positioned to facilitate a course on data analysis using R. Participants benefit not only from her technical mastery but also from her commitment to capacity building transforming complex datasets into insights that drive sustainable development and empower professionals across sectors.
