Clear and effective scientific writing is essential for communicating research findings, data, and evidence-based ideas to academic, professional, and public audiences. However, valuable research can lose its impact when it is poorly organised, unclear, or presented without following recognised scientific-writing standards.

This masterclass equips participants with the practical skills required to plan, structure, write, edit, and present scientific information clearly and convincingly. Participants will learn to produce well-structured scientific papers, research reports, proposals, abstracts, and presentations that meet academic, industry, and professional standards. The course will also strengthen their ability to communicate findings credibly, increase the visibility of their work, and contribute meaningfully to their respective fields.

Week 1 2. Developing a Research Argument Defining the research problem; formulating objectives and research questions; organising ideas; building coherent arguments. Prepare an outline for a scientific paper or research report.
Week 2 3. Reviewing and Using Scientific Literature Literature searching; evaluating sources; synthesising evidence; paraphrasing; summarising; avoiding plagiarism. Develop a short evidence-based literature synthesis.
Week 2 4. Structuring a Scientific Paper Writing the title, abstract, introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion, and recommendations. Draft selected sections of a scientific paper using the IMRaD structure.
Week 3 5. Presenting Data and Research Findings Presenting quantitative and qualitative findings; selecting tables, graphs, and figures; describing results accurately. Create and explain a table, graph, or figure based on sample research data.
Week 3 6. Referencing and Research Ethics Citation and referencing styles; reference-management tools; authorship; plagiarism; responsible use of AI; publication ethics. Format citations and prepare a reference list using an appropriate style.
Week 4 7. Editing and Preparing Work for Publication Revising manuscripts; improving flow and readability; proofreading; journal selection; responding to reviewers; submission requirements. Edit a sample manuscript and prepare a publication-readiness checklist.
Week 4 8. Scientific Communication and Presentation Developing research briefs, posters, abstracts, reports, and presentations; communicating findings to specialist and non-specialist audiences. Present and receive feedback on a completed scientific-writing project.
